Speaking - Getting a Headshot
by Keith Elder
When you're applying to speak at an event, you'll need to submit two items: A picture of yourself, referred to as a headshot, and a bio. Those new to speaking may be tempted to reach for a photo they have on social media or another existing photo they can crop down. I'll admit I've done that in a pinch. However, nothing can take the place of a professional headshot.
You shouldn't use a social media picture for numerous reasons, including writing on clothes, distracting backgrounds and blurry or pixilated images. Overall, social media pictures just aren't the most professional shots.
Luckily, at Quicken Loans we have a full-time media team that can help. Professional photographers are standing by, and all it takes is a quick email to PhotoTeam@QuickenLoans.com to schedule a professional headshot photo shoot. The team sets up backdrops, and their equipment in the studio is state-of-the-art.
On the day of your photo shoot, dress for success. Your headshot isn't the best place to experiment with fashion. Try to find something with a classic look, which won't look dated in a couple of years. Avoid things like T-shirts or any shirts with writing on them. For men, blues are always a good choice, and while a jacket and tie are optional, we recommend a jacket. A nice, crisp button-up shirt with a blazer is a hard combination to beat, and is something most men already have. For women, controlled and classic hairstyles and light makeup will stand the test of time. Look for clothes that are solid colors, with simple necklines like a V-neck, cowl or collared. Fun, but classic necklines like a peter pan or keyhole can also work great and add a little more personality. See the lists below for more quick tips on clothes and colors.
Once you reach out to the Photo team, ask which backdrop color they have available and wear a color that will contrast nicely. When selecting your clothes, remember that headshots will often be converted to black and white. You might have worn a pink tie that looks great in color, but when it's converted to black and white, not so much.
Lastly, while you may be inclined to get a fresh haircut the day before your headshot, it's best to get a haircut the week before. This gives time for it to grow out a bit to give you a more natural look.
